The Spaces of Blight Project

The Spaces of Blight Project is a high school level course taught by From Lot to Spot that encourages students not only to preserve their environment but to take an active role in their community’s economic development by maintaining and beautifying their neighborhoods. In order to create change in neighborhoods that are poorly maintained and in need of revitalization, students will identify spaces of blight or “SOB’s” in their communities and throughout the course of the semester covert them into spaces of light or “SOL’s”. Students will have first hand experience in creating real-world solutions to beautify and improve their communities. The project debuts Fall 2008 at Environmental Charter High School.

Goal: Revitalization through Beautification
The main goal of the Spaces of Blight project is to create awareness about blighted spaces in neighborhoods that are in need of revitalization and teach students to create hands on, real-world solutions to these problems. Students learn the importance of how a community’s aesthetic component not only affects the environment but the development of communities as a whole.

The Spaces of Blight project will allow students to engage in policy making, critical thinking, strategic community planning and environmental justice issues. Students will utilize and will get hands on training on tools such as GIS mapping, governmental processing, urban design, streetscape maintenance and landscape architecture. Students will be change agents by engaging in real-world and hands-on solutions.

Click on placemarks to see pictures and descriptions of SOBs in their communities. (Note:you may need to zoom out to view all placemarks)
Based on criteria they have identified , students will vote on one space to revitalize and create a space of light or "SOL".
Stayed tuned for voting results in early November!
