Our Mission Statement

From Lot to Spot’s (FLTS) mission is to stimulate and contribute to community economic development in blighted communities by facilitating the creation of accessible green and open spaces. We promote social and economic revitalization through beautification through the creation of park spaces from vacant, blighted lots. FLTS strives to address the need and inequity of park/green space in underserved and blighted neighborhoods in the greater Los Angeles area.

From Lot to Spot, through its vision of empowering neighborhoods one vacant lot at a time, works to empower residents by ensuring community participation and collaboration in every step of the decision-making process involved in creating these spaces and improving their neighborhoods.

Our Community Hero--Viviana Franco!

Our very own Viviana Franco was honored at the Cesar Chavez Foundation Dinner last month. Jennifer Gonzalez, a Senior at Environmental Charter High School, selected Viviana as an inspirational teacher based on her work in her community and in social justice. This video, shown at the dinner, was created by Jennifer to showcase Viviana, her life, inspiration and passion for "fighting for those who can't fight for themselves." We are so proud of you, Viviana...our Community Hero! ENJOY!

Seed Bombs Not War

This site offers a great guide on guerilla gardening. Seed bombs are a great, inexpensive, no bureaucratic red-tape means to green and beautify vacant lots.
Of course, please be mindful to choose native species.

Developer Must Pay 10% Today

"A down payment equal to 10% of the bid amount is required not later than APRIL 15, 2008."

These are Caltrans regulations from its "Terms of Option to Purchase" regulations.
"Developer Al" placed a bid of $300,000 for the property so must provide Caltrans with a money order or cashier's check of $30,000 by the end of the business day.

We expect Caltrans to follow these regulations as firmly as they stood by their original regulations that this property must be sold by public auction - no room for discussion for any alternatives.

Property Sold but Struggle is not Over

Despite our silent protest of 10 students and supporters (see sildeshow below), the property was sold to an individual named “Al” at the April 9th Caltrans auction.

Although disheartened, we are not defeated! We are in the process of obtaining the individual’s name so we may speak to him. We have introduced ourselves to the developer and are awaiting his response.

We are continuing to explore legal avenues that we are entitled to and many groups, individuals and social justice law groups have been more than kind to provide us with information and statutes we were not even aware of. We are indebted to all of you for your continued support – we are confident that community, good will and social justice will triumph.

Despite this small obstacle, we still very much believe, and pardon the “Spanglish”, que si se puede.

Stay tuned…

The following is a slideshow created by a FLTS Operation Clean Sweep student volunteer about their experience at the auction. Operation Clean Sweep volunteers are currently students at Environmental Charter High School.
